Intraoral X-ray systems: These units capture X-ray images from
inside the patient's mouth. They consist of an X-ray generator,
which produces the radiation, and a sensor or film holder, which
captures the X-ray image. Intraoral X-rays are further classified
into several types, including:
Periapical X-rays: These capture the entire tooth, including the
root and surrounding bone.
Bitewing X-rays: These show the upper and lower teeth in a specific
section of the mouth. They are commonly used to detect dental
caries (cavities) between teeth.
Extraoral X-ray systems: These units capture X-ray images from
outside the patient's mouth. They are designed to capture a broader
view of the patient's facial bones and teeth. Extraoral X-ray
systems include:
Panoramic X-rays: These capture a wide-angle view of the entire
mouth, including both upper and lower jaws, teeth, and surrounding
structures.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT): This advanced imaging
technique provides three-dimensional (3D) images of the patient's
teeth and jaw. CBCT is particularly useful for orthodontic
treatment planning, dental implant placement, and evaluating
complex dental conditions.
